Learned as a kid? No one to play with?
Want to start from scratch?
Harry Bolick, who runs the Beacon Old timey fiddle jam on second Tuesdays at the Howland Cultural Center, here in Beacon has been teaching for decades and can get you started learning to play by ear. We will learn some tunes and see how they are built from simple phrases, chords and scales.
If it was hard, folk fiddling would not exist.
*With enough interest this workshop will evolve into a multi-week class.
Born in Mississippi, Harry Bolick has researched, performed, recorded, and taught the classic fiddle tunes from the state. He has taught and performed at concerts, workshops, festivals and camps, nationally and in internationally.
The University Press of Mississippi has published his two Mississippi fiddle books. Together these two books transcribe and document almost every known tune from the state. More info: http://www.bolick.net/books.html
He has 16 recordings to his credit and performs solo and with the Mississippi Travelers string Band. www.mississippifiddle.com
